Pearson" Subject: FTVIII other songs: maybe GDH? Date: 9 Aug 1995 15:16:31 GMT Hey now, Another post mentioned that maybe someone could put a tape out of the other songs from the FTV III show. Well, I doubt Cutler would do it on his own, based only on *what I've read* about his not really liking to just throw tapes out at us. But, I bet David Gans could give them a listen. Then, if the other stuff was worth having he could put them on his show. Mr. Gans continually gives us great stuff to hear, and responds to his listeners' requests (remember the dozens of "Please play UBChain breakout, man!" posts?) Well, here is one request. Please, David Gans, if you can work it out, play the rest of the show on the GDH sometime. That way, GDM can successfully market their 2-CD set, and those of us who *really* want the whole show can patch it in on our own personal tapes from your show. Everyone wins, as far as I can tell. (AP) Jerry Garcia, legendary leader of the Grateful Dead, died early today, Marin County sheriff's officials said. Sheriff's Deputy Doug Allen said Garcia apparently died of natural causes. Garcia, 53, had a history of health problems that caused frequent breaks in The Grateful Dead's grueling concert schedule. In 1986, he was hospitalized in a diabetic coma. He also has admitted past drug abuse. (Aug 9, 1995 - 12:36 EDT) -- Jerry Garcia, the master guitarist whose band the Grateful Dead symbolized the 1960s counterculture and remained a top concert draw three decades later, died today at a drug treatment center. He was 53. No cause of death was immediately given. He was found at 4:23 a.m. by a counselor at Serenity Knowles, a residential treatment center for drug addiction, said Dan Murphy of the Marin County sheriff's office. A nurse attempted CPR, and sheriff's department staff who were summoned also failed to revive him, Murphy said. The Grateful Dead, with its roots in the Bay Area's psychedelic scene of the 1960s, combined rock, bluegrass and folk influences into a unique stew. Garcia was lead guitarist, composer and vocalist. Among the band's best known songs were "Truckin'," "Casey Jones," and "Friend of the Devil." Its only top 10 hit was the 1987 song "Touch of Grey," with its refrain "I will survive." But the Dead was almost more a way of life than a band to the thousands of "Deadheads," many of whom followed the group from concert to concert. The band has been the most popular act in the United States, grossing tens of millions of dollars each year. "You need music," Garcia once said. "I don't know why; it's probably one of those Joe Campbell questions, why we need ritual. We need magic, and bliss, and power, myth, and celebration and religion in our lives, and music is a good way to encapsulate a lot of it." The bearded, rotund Garcia had a history of health problems that caused frequent breaks in the Dead's grueling concert schedule. In 1986, he entered the hospital in a diabetic coma. He also has admitted past drug abuse. Garcia slimmed down, stopped smoking and hired a personal fitness trainer after falling ill with exhaustion in 1991. In recent years, Garcia also developed a line of colorful neckties. But the years of constant touring took its toll. "It was a meltdown. Too many cigarettes, too much junk food and too little exercise," band spokesman Dennis McNally said last year. McNally was unavailable for immediate comment today. Date: Wed, 09 Aug 1995 12:06:10 -0500 (Adds more details) LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist of veteran rock band the Grateful Dead, died of apparent natural causes Wednesday, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said. Ken Frey, a detective at the sheriff's office, said Garcia was found dead at 4.23 am (723 EDT) by staff members at Serenity Knolls, a drug and alcohol treatment facility at Forest Knolls in California. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Garcia, 53, had suffered from diabetes and general ill health for several years. An American cultural phenomenon for more than a quarter century, the Grateful Dead was one of the leading bands of San Francisco's 1960's flower power movement. They extended their reach over the ensuing decades becoming one of the world's most popular draws on the concert circuit even though they rarely had hit albums. The group was formed in 1966 and was one of the icons of the 60s and 70s. Jerry Garcia along with fellow guitarist Bob Weir, bass player Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzman were original members. Drummer Mickey Hart joined in 1967. Garcia, born Jerome John Garcia in San Francisco in 1942, was the son a band leader. He dropped out of high school at 17 and worked as a salesman and teacher in California before forming the Warlocks rock group in 1965. The following year the Warlocks became the Grateful Dead. Your and the band's unshakeable stance on love and friendship will be one that will never be matched by any person nor group in the lifetimes of many to come. I cry because I don't know who will be left to carry on this torch in the hard rain of despair and indifference that our world has come to. I never have seen your face, but your voice has made me realize that life can be sweeter. You can rest in peace because it is clear that every one that has ever felt the touch of your muse will cry a tear and these tears will become an ocean and you can be set out to drift on these seas at night to feel the pleasure that you have bestowed on us all. I never knew you, but already I miss you as do tens and tens of thousands all over the Earth. When I get home tonight, I'll be listening to tapes and getting all those "Jerry shivers", probably more than ever. Something is brightening my day though: The local radio stations are playing all Grateful Dead. No old hippie jokes. No "it was bound to happen". All respectful and in good taste. (I'm shaking right now.) I'm gonna call the radio station and say thanks for doing the right thing. Let's stick together folks. God, I've gotten so many calls from non-deadhead friends just saying they hope I'm ok -- "sorry to hear it". I'm thankful for them and all of us. The place was pretty crowded with the majority there to take in any dead tunes possible. I think many others were under the same impression as me that Bobby would play second. Anyway some highlights included Masterpiece, Good Morning Little School, but the real treat was Wassermans bass solo into Victim were BoBBy focused mainly on his angular rhythms with very little leads, but it was really well played and boy it becomes even more apparent what role BoBBy has taken for his main commitment in taking up alot of the slack when Jer is having an off night. Throwin Stones came out of victim and Bobby nailed it! The jam was great and Bobby was his cowboy, rock star self not exactly charging to the front of the stage but defintely moving around and playing great rythms throughout the jam which he defintely took to an exciting level with just his and not Jerry's guitar. (KInd of like the Throwin at Giants 95 when Bob and Phil without Jerry really jammed it out. (Jerry had alot of guitar problems that night his guitar wasn't really doing anything for almost the entire second set-Technical problems not Jerry's fault) Easy Answers was the encore. ------------------------------ From: ripple@news.IntNet.net (Brian Bond) Subject: U.S. Blues Date: 9 Aug 1995 13:05:26 -0400 I just wanted to say thank you to Jerry for the inspirations he gave me and every other head throughout the years. Grateful Dead Leader Jerry Garcia Dead at 53 LOS ANGELES (Reuter) - Jerry Garcia, the lead guitarist of veteran rock band the Grateful Dead, died of apparent natural causes Wednesday, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said. Ken Frey, a detective at the sheriff's office, said Garcia was found dead at 4:23 a.m. (7:23 EDT) by staff members at Serenity Knolls, a drug and alcohol treatment facility at Forest Knolls in California. ------------------------------ From: ndc32@aol.com (Ndc32) Subject: Baltimore Honors Jerry Date: 9 Aug 1995 13:36:25 -0400 Reply-To: ndc32@aol.com (Ndc32) TONIGHT -- AUGUST 9, 1995 Informal gathering and drum circle for Deadheads to honor the late, great Jerry Garcia and find comfort and consolation with others who will understand and care. I am simply stunned; I feel a loss like I would a good friend. I'd like to think he was. To the people here that do understand: I know what you're going through -Betty ------------------------------ From: dougmac@world.std.com (Greg Creedon) Subject: Jerry at Peace Date: Wed, 9 Aug 1995 16:02:03 GMT Rest in peace, dear soul. We need to have a symbol of out unity and good wished for him...(like the yellow ribbons). I took out my record cover for Go To Heaven (that alone made me feel better, looking into that smile..and that look on Brett's face over Jerry shoulder...spooky). I wrote *RIP Jerry* on a piece of paper and taped to the album and placed it to my car window. At lunch I noticed several people tip their hat or smile with a peaceful far away look. What do you suggest? TieDyed ribbons on rear view mirror and antennas? Lets make a unified statement coast to coast. At least we all need to half-mast our flags. As with any loss, lets reach out to each other and remember the good times. He was being interviewed in the most annoying and cliched way, and seemed to not appreciate it. His thoughts, about the uniqueness of Jerry as a musician and teacher, seemed to go right past the interviewer.... Even the cops were dancing in the aisles. Donna and Bobby sang with a fire and we wanted it to never end. We loved ya' Jerry. Rest easy, ol' buddy.
